Pip Boydell qualified from the RVC in 1984, and after a surgical position at the R(D)SVS, and a residency in ophthalmology at the RVC set up the Animal Medical Centre Referral Services in 1990 in Manchester, the first dedicated referral practice in the UK and the first with an in-house brain scanner 1 year later. A second hospital was purpose built in South Yorkshire 10 years later and the AMC continues to provide a referral service in all small animal and some large animal and exotic disciplines.
