Pan-European Online Companion Vets’ CPD Event in support of Ukraine
The Webinar Vet and the Federation of European Companion Animal Veterinary Associations (FECAVA) joined forces.
We brought to you a free CPD/CE virtual event to raise funds to help with the Ukrainian emergency effort. The event took place live on Saturday 9th April 2022 from 10am – 10pm CEST / 9am – 9pm BST, with over 10 hours of CPD/CE lectures on a huge variety of veterinary topics, delivered by experts from around the world.

About the speakers
Enjoy over 10 hours of lectures delivered by experts. We would like to thank all of our incredible speakers for taking part in this event.
Sarah Caney is an internationally recognized specialist in feline medicine who has worked as a feline-only vet for more than twenty years. She trained as a specialist at the University of Bristol and is one of thirteen recognized specialists in feline medicine working within the UK. Sarah has written or co-written four books published by her business Vet Professionals including ‘Caring for cat with chronic kidney disease’, ‘Caring for a cat with lower urinary tract disease’, ‘Caring for a cat with hyperthyroidism’ and ‘Caring for an elderly cat’. Sarah enjoys seeing a mixture of first opinion and referral feline cases. Sarah conducts online owner surveys and has published much of her research results in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery.
Ana Nemec graduated as a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia in 2004. She continued with a multi-disciplinary PhD program in Biomedicine at the University of Ljubljana, focusing on research in the systemic effects of periodontal diseases, while working as a veterinarian at the Small Animal Clinic of the Veterinary Faculty, University of Ljubljana. She was awarded her PhD in 2009 and completed her 3-year residency training in Dentistry and Oral Surgery at the University of California-Davis, USA in July 2012. Ana passed her Board examination and became a Diplomate of American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) in 2013 and has also been accepted to the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC). Ana Nemec was working as a veterinary specialist in a private veterinary hospital in Slovenia in 2018, before she returned to the Small Animal Clinic of the Veterinary Faculty in Ljubljana as an Assistant Professor and also launched her private consultancy company (ananemec.si) in 2019. She is also an invited lecturer at the Postgraduate study program in surgery, anesthesiology, ophthalmology and veterinary dentistry at the Veterinary Faculty, University of Zagreb, Croatia. Ana is a member and past-treasurer of the European Veterinary Dental Society, past Board member of the EVDC, Credential Committee member of AVDC, recipient of several national and international awards in veterinary medicine, an Associate Editor of the Journal Veterinary Dentistry and Oromaxillofacial Surgery, a reviewer in several international journals, author of research and professional papers, and a keen speaker and teacher. Her main research interest is oral biology, and in particular host response to oral bacteria and tumor biology. But her biggest passion remains the teaching of veterinary dentistry.
Dr Jerzy Paweł Gawor (1966) graduated in April 1992. He received his PhD in 1996. Since January 2009 Fellow Academy of Veterinary Dentistry. In 2015 successfully completed requirements and became Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) and European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC). At present Dr Gawor provides dental teaching services in European School of Advanced Veterinary Studies in Europe and Asia.
His main field of professional activity is dentistry, head and neck surgery and oncology.
Several hundred advanced dentistry procedures a year have resulted in a wealth of skill and practical knowledge. Published and presented over 120 publications in veterinary dentistry.
Dr. Elsa Beltran received her veterinary degree from the University Cardenal Herrera Ceu, Valencia, Spain, in 2002, following which she spent two years in general practice before undertaking an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at University of Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Beltran completed a neurology internship in 2006 followed by a residency in neurology and neurosurgery at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket, United Kingdom. Dr Beltran obtained the Diploma of the European College of Veterinary Neurology in 2011 and afterwards she spent 4 years as Senior Clinician at the same institution. In 2014, Dr Beltran joined the Royal Veterinary College, University of London where she is currently working as Associate Professor in Neurology-Neurosurgery. She is interested in all aspects of veterinary neurology and neurosurgery, but has a particular interest understanding neurological sequels in dogs after traumatic brain injury, all aspects of neuro-ophthalmology, neuroimaging and neurosurgery.
Holger is currently Professor of Small Animal Diseases and the Head of Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover and the treasurer of the European Board of Veterinary Specialisation. He graduated from the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover in 2001, where he also did his PhD in Neuropharmacology studying basic mechanisms of drug-resistant epilepsy. He then completed his specialist clinical education doing an internship and a residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). The RVC also provided him with the chance to not only excel academically and clinically, but also in his leadership skills, going through the reigns from lecturer to head of service, clinical director of the Small Animal Referral clinic and last as head of department of clinical science and services. Holger is internationally known for his work in the field of Corona sniffing dogs, neuropathic pain and epilepsy. He was President of the European College of Veterinary Neurology and active in the Executive Board of Veterinary Specialisation as treasurer. Holger has been chairing the International Veterinary Epilepsy Task Force, which published recently seven consensus statements for canine and feline epilepsy and was a co-chair of the recent published ACVIM consensus statement about medical treatment of epilepsy. He has been a recipient of several Jim Bee educator excellent in teaching awards, the prestigious Bourgelat Award from BSAVA and the International Canine Health Award from the Kennel Club. He has published multiple books and book chapters, >240 articles, >150 conference abstracts, and is a frequent flyer on the international conference circuit.
Kersti is a Sydney University veterinary graduate and has a Bachelor of Arts in Behavioural Science (major in psychology) and Master of Arts (Hons) by thesis. She is a Fellow of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists, Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine.
Kersti is an adjunct Professor at the University of Queensland, adjunct Associate Professor at Charles Sturt University, head tutor for the Distance Education course in Behavioural Medicine for Centre for Veterinary Education at University of Sydney, Teaches undergraduate veterinary students at the University of Sydney. She regularly presents at conferences nationally and internationally, both in person and by zoom, has written many text book chapters, a book, Training Your Cat, is a regular presenter on radio and is a consultant on VIN. She created Puppy Preschool® and Kitten Kindy®.
Sarah spent four years in mixed general practice before setting up Behavioural Referrals Veterinary Practice in 1992. Sarah is an RCVS and European Veterinary Specialist in Behavioural Medicine and was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2018. She is an External Lecturer in small animal behavioural medicine on the veterinary undergraduate course at Liverpool University. In 2019 she gained her Postgraduate Certificate in Veterinary Education and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Authority. She is a Certified Clinical Animal Behaviourist under the ASAB accreditation scheme and registered as a Veterinary Behaviourist with the Animal Behaviour and Training Council. She sees clinical cases across North West England. In 2002 Sarah became a Founding Diplomate of the European College of Animal Welfare and Behavioural Medicine. Sarah has a special interest in the interplay between emotional and physical illness in dogs and cats and particularly in the role of pain. She promotes the recognition of emotional health issues in companion animals and the role of the veterinary profession in safeguarding the welfare of animals in this context. Sarah lectures extensively, at home and abroad, on behavioural medicine and is an author, co-author and editor of several books.
Reto Neiger, a citizen from Switzerland gained a Swiss Veterinary degree in 1988 from the University of Berne and then worked as locum one year in mixed private practice (cows, horses, small animals) and as a research fellow (in veterinary pathology) one year to gain his Dr.med.vet. He then returned to academia where he completed an internship and residency in Internal Medicine in Berne, Switzerland and Louisiana, USA.
To gain his PhD he carried out research into canine and feline Helicobacter infections at the human teaching hospital in Berne. From 1999 to 2003 Reto Neiger was a lecturer at the Royal Veterinary College in London, UK and from 2003 to 2016 he was Professor and head of the Small Animal Internal Medicine Department of the University in Giessen, Germany. From 2017 to the end of 2019 he was working as internal medicine specialist in the German largest private small animal clinic in Hofheim. He is now country medical director of Evidensia DACH (Germany, Switzerland, Austria). He is a Diplomat of the American and European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.
Katrin Hartmann, DrMedVet, DrHabil, DECVIM-CA (Internal Medicine), is a professor of internal medicine and head of the clinic of small animal medicine at LMU of Munich in Germany, where she also earned her veterinary degree and completed her doctoral thesis and habilitation thesis. Dr. Hartmann has authored many articles and book chapters and has lectured at numerous international meetings and congresses. She is a member of the European Advisory Board on Cat Diseases. Her research interest is in infectious diseases in cats and dogs, with a special focus on virus infections in cats.
A graduate of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Life Sciences in Lublin in 2012. PhD student at the First Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University of Warsaw at the Department of General and Transplant Surgery. She consults nephrological and urological patients from all over the country, qualifies and performs hemodialysis procedures in dogs and cats, is a co-creator of a modern dialysis station for animals at the 24-hour Veterinary Clinic “Puławska” in Warsaw.
Since 2019, she has been associated with the international veterinary clinic “Anicura” in Sweden, where she improves her qualifications under the supervision of European specialists.
Associate Professor Bogdan Alexandru Vitalaru graduated the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest in 2004, PhD since October 2009, and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest since 2020.
Starting 2017 Dr. Bogdan Alexandru Vitalaru became Associate Professor at Pisa University, Perugia University, Zagreb University and Lublin University, teaching urology and nephrology both for students and postgraduates.
Over the years he has written more than 100 scientific papers on topics related to oncologic surgery, dialysis, hemodialysis and emergencies. His 4 books about emergencies were sold in more than 2000 copies in Romania in the last 4 years. His last book it is completely dedicated to peritoneal dialysis in small animals and it has been released also in English in Italy, Bulgaria, Turkey, Greece, Croatia, Ukraine and Poland starting February 2018.
The Peritoneal dialysis in small animal book received the Romanian Academy Award, “”Traian Savulescu””, in December 2019.
Since January 2014, in collaboration with BBraun Romania, within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, he opened the first Veterinary Hemodialysis Clinic in Romania and one of the few in Eastern Europe.
Starting 2013, he established the Romanian Association of Veterinary Nephrology, Hemodialivet, who’s Chairman he is.
In the last 10 years, Dr. Vitalaru has been a lecturer for Hills Romania and KTL in Romania and Europe regarding urology, nephrology and renal replacement therapies. He is also leading the Emergency Department of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest since 2015.
Starting 2014, Dr. Vitalaru has initiated a program of workshops and seminars regarding renal patients all over Romania (București, Iași, Cluj, Timișoara, Brașov, Constanța), Bulgaria (Varna, Stara Zagora), Poland (Krakow, Warsaw), Croatia (Zagreb), Italy (Perugia, Pisa) and in Turkey (Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya). He was awarded with the Continuing medical education prize – AMVAC/RoSAVA, Sinaia 12-14 November 2015 and SPEAKER OF THE YEAR – Romanian College of Veterinarians, Bucharest, 17 December 2015. He is a member within the board of some of the most prestigious publications in Romania: Cat life, 2015, Romanian Journal of Veterinary Orthopedics and Imagistic, 2015, Romanian Journal of Veterinary Medicine & Pharmacology, 2016, Romanian Cardiology Review. In 2016, Dr. Vitalaru has received the Special Prize for the best veterinary initiative of the year in Romania – Innovation in Health.
Since November 2017 he is a board member of AMVAC (Small Animal Romanian Practitioners Association), FECAVA Director for Romania and since March 2019, Dr. Vitalaru is FECAVA Ambassador and ROVECCS Ambassador (Romanian EVECCS partener).
In September 2019, Dr. Vitalaru received the Didier-Noël Carlotti Award (DCA), named after a veterinary surgeon who initiated, planned and inspired FECAVA and who served as its first President for four years. The DCA is to be awarded annually to one of FECAVA members who has provided an outstanding service in the fields of inter professional communication and/or continuing education for companion animal veterinarians in Europe.
In November 2019, at the AMVAC Congress, he receives the ”Ion Alin Bîrțoiu” Award for best medical practitioner in Romania, and the Romanian Society of Veterinary Nephrology Hemodialivet receives the Award for the best veterinary medical Society of the year 2019.
His passions are mountain hiking, fishing and nature and as a result of this, he has initiated in 2017 a Vet Camp in the Romanian mountains with vets all around Romania.
The greatest achievements of his life are Silvia his wife and his two beautiful daughters: Natalia and Sofia.
Since August 2019, Sina is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of California, Davis. Since her graduation from veterinary school in 2004, her research and clinical focus has been in the field of feline chronic enteropathies, specifically in current and novel diagnostics of this prevalent disease. She has also published in this field and developed a novel diagnostic test to differentiate inflammatory bowel disease from small cell lymphoma in cats with chronic enteropathy.
Ingrid Hang graduated her veterinary medicine studies at Estonian University of Life Sciences in 2006. During her studies she had an opportunity to be as an Erasmus student one year in Portugal at the University of Vasco da Gama. In addition, she gathered valuable knowledge in England (The Royal Veterinary College), Norway and Sweden. After graduation she worked
for a while in Estonia as a small animal veterinarian.
During the years 2007-2015 Ingrid Hang was occupied with achieving a doctoral degree at the University of Helsinki. Year 2015 she defended her thesis about effects of diet on the intestinal
microbiota, bacteria-derived metabolites and digestive enzymes in dogs in co-operation of the Gastrointestinal Laboratory at the Texas A&M University, USA.
Since 2015 she has been a lecturer of Small Animal Gastroenterology at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the Estonian University of Life Sciences.
Ingrid Hang is also active in veterinary private practice, working in Tallinn and at the Small Animal Clinic of Estonian University of Life Sciences. She has a clinical interest in small animal gastroenterology, diagnostic imaging and clinical nutrition.
Ingrid Hang has devoted her time to veterinary medicine outside the clinical work, too. She has organised many veterinary CPD events and has been lecturing for veterinary colleagues from different countries (mainly Baltics, but also Ukraine and Armenia). Ingrid has been a president of the Estonian Small Animal Veterinary Association (ESAVA) during 2018 -2021 and a board member during 2015-2021. Ingrid has been also the representative of ESAVA in FECAVA and WSAVA. She is also a member of European Society of Comparative Gastroenterology.
In her free time she likes to travel (not so easy lately), restore the furniture and develop the skill in interior design.
Ariane completed her veterinary medicine degree at the University of Munich and after a spell in small animal practice returned to university to achieve her doctorate. Following an Internship at the Animal Health Trust in Newmarket, England, she moved to Scotland to take up the Senior Clinical Scholarship in Veterinary Dermatology at the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh. During the first year of her residency she achieved her Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) dermatology certificate in 2002. During the course of her career Ariane has had many papers published and in 2005 she passed her European Diploma in Veterinary Dermatology. She is the past chief examiner of the old UK certificate system, is a current examiner for the modular certificate, is a past president of BVDSG and current scientific program co-ordinator, ECVD secretary and on the DGVD congress oragnisation team. After many years in the UK, Ariane returned to her native Germany in 2018 and has started a dermatology only referral practice, Hund Katze Haut, near Bonn. She covers all aspects of dermatology and has a particular interest in allergic skin disease and otitis.
Dr. Boaz Arzi is a Professor and Chief of Dentistry and Oral surgery at the department of Surgical and Radiological Sciences, UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Arzi completed the residency-training program in dentistry and oral surgery at the School of Veterinary Medicine and two years fellowship in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis. He is a Diplomate of the American Veterinary Dental College (AVDC) and the European Veterinary Dental College (EVDC). Dr. Arzi is also a Founding Fellow of the AVDC in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Arzi’s clinical and research focus is on oral maxillofacial disorders and regenerative solutions in dogs and cats. His lab also investigates TMJ disorders and treatments across species. Dr. Arzi is the Director of the Veterinary Institute for Regenerative Cures (VIRC) at UC Davis. Ultimately, Dr. Arzi’s work is translational with the aim of One Health treatment modalities for both human and animal health.
Xavier Levy has been a Veterinarian since 2003 and a Veterinary doctor since 2005.

Dr. Kathryn Good is a board certified Veterinary Ophthalmologist and Clinical Professor of Veterinary Ophthalmology at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She spent 6 years in private ophthalmology practice before joining the faculty at UC Davis in 2008. Dr Good returned to academia given her love for teaching, both student teaching and resident training. She has published in several veterinary scientific journals and is actively involved in clinical ophthalmic research.
Laurent graduated from Paris’ vet school, the Ecole Nationale Vétérinaire d’Alfort, in France, and was subsequently assistant instructor in the anatomy department for a year. He then qualified for a 2-year surgical internship in the same school and later completed a Master of Science in Biology and Physiology of Circulation and Respiration, as well as a university degree in Experimental Surgery and Microsurgery.
He completed an ECVS residency at the Centre Hospitalier Vétérinaire Frégis, near Paris and became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2008.
Laurent worked at VRCC Veterinary Referrals in Essex, from 2006 to 2014, where he was one of the full-time soft-tissue surgeons and directors. He joined Fitzpatrick Referrals in October 2014, where he currently is a senior consultant surgeon and director of the Oncology and Soft Tissue hospital. His fields of interest include oncologic, reconstructive and general soft tissue surgeries.
Matt is a European Veterinary Specialist and an RCVS Recognised Specialist and is currently President of the European College of Veterinary Anaesthesia & Analgesia. In 2018 Matt returned to his roots in the south and joined Anderson Moores Veterinary Specialists. His main interests lie in acute and chronic pain management.
Recently Matt contributed to the development of an app designed for vets and nurses in practice on anaesthesia of dogs and cats. Matt lectures nationwide on a variety of topics including pain management, CPR and local anaesthesia. Matt is one of the co-founders of The Zero Pain Philosophy, an educational resource for veterinary professionals.
Ross graduated from Glasgow University in 2001, gaining his BSAVA Certificate in Small Animal Surgery in 2014 and RCVS Advanced Practitioner status in 2015.
Ross is Clinical Director of Referrals at Pets’n’Vets, Glasgow where he leads Roundhouse Referrals: widening access to Advanced Veterinary Surgery in the West of Scotland. In this role he is also frequently involved in diagnosing and treating pets with osteoarthritis.

Dr Julian Hoad BVetMed BSc(Hons) MRCVS is a Veterinary Surgeon and Clinical Director at Crossways Veterinary Group in the UK. Julian qualified as a Vet in 1996 after obtaining degrees in Microbiology and Biochemistry. He’s interested in Ultrasonography, Surgery, Rock Climbing, Drama and Tapirs.
Mike Brampton is an Anaesthetic Specialist and founded Thames Medical, a leading supplier of Anaesthetic Monitoring Equipment for Veterinary Medicine in the UK. Mike founded Thames Medical in 1993 after working across the world with a variety of species. He’s got a few patents to his name and is interested in Capnography, Anaesthetics, Photography, Cycling and Skiing.
Cat is an experienced small animal veterinary surgeon working in first opinion practice. She also has a significant social media presence as ‘Cat The Vet’ and is a strong and trusted voice as an advocate for the veterinary profession and animal welfare.
Wolfgang studied veterinary medicine in both Hannover and in Oslo and after a short spell in mixed practice in his native Germany he moved to the UK where he worked for six years at a small animal clinic in Camberley, Surrey before establishing the Virginia Water Veterinary Clinic near London in 1999 where he still remains as Clinical Director.
After joining BSAVA’s International Affairs committee he became the UK FECAVA Director in 2009 and was elected a Board member in 2011. In 2017 be became the FECAVA President.
Wolfgang is a general companion animal practitioner with a keen interest especially in feline medicine, soft tissue surgery and oncology. He is organising both local and international CPD events for over 25 years.
In 2014 he received the PetSavers Veterinary Achievement Award.
In his spare time he enjoys traveling and hiking and all forms of endurance sports.
Dr Pete Wedderburn BVM&S MRCVS qualified as a vet from Edinburgh in 1985 and has run his own 8-veterinarian companion animal practice in County Wicklow, Ireland, since 1991.
